Delta School District Teams with Terasen in Alternative Energy Program

March 18, 2009

DELTA, B.C. - The Delta School District is proud to announce collaboration with Terasen for the evaluation, development and implementation of alternative thermal energy solutions such as geo-exchange systems as part of its Energy Management Program.

Through this collaboration, the District will work with Terasen to explore cost effective ways to reduce the District’s use of traditional low efficiency heating sources, cutting its carbon footprint and working towards becoming carbon neutral by 2010.

“We are very excited to be working with Terasen in exploring more effective and sustainable solutions for our energy needs,” says Steve Cardwell, District Superintendent. “This is a positive step for our schools, our community and the environment and supports the Provincial Climate Change Action Plan.”

The initiative with Terasen marks the next step in the school district’s efforts to reduce overall energy consumption and become carbon neutral by 2010.

“Harnessing renewable energy sources is a laudable goal, and we are pleased the school district has teamed up with Terasen to help them achieve that objective,” says Gareth Jones, Terasen Energy Services Vice President and General Manager. “Delta is leading the way as a district that wishes to reduce their environmental impact, save on carbon taxes and contribute to a clean, healthy environment for all British Columbians.”

Earlier initiatives such as the recently completed thermal energy retrofit has reduced the District’s carbon footprint by as much as 200 tonnes and will save the District as much as $30,000 annually in utility costs, carbon tax and future carbon offsets. Other initiatives, including the collaboration with Terasen, could see these figures grow to as much as a 900 tonne carbon footprint reduction and $150,000 saved annually within three years.
