Wakefield Beach

Sechelt, British Columbia

Wakefield Beach offers comfort and luxury with green technology

Sechelt’s Wakefield Beach includes many green features. The geoexchange loop field system for heating and cooling, owned and maintained by Terasen, is key to keeping residents warm in winter and cool in summer.
The 31-unit development of seaside homes and townhouses is designed to have minimal impact on the environment without sacrificing residents’
comfort or luxury.

For Wakefield Beach homeowners, the clean geoexchange energy source is a distinguishing factor leading their new community towards a greener future.

The technology

The technology behind geoexchange heating and cooling is simple. It’s based on the premise that the ground absorbs and stores heat from the sun all year long.

To collect thermal energy at Wakefield Beach, two vertical boreholes were drilled 300 feet into the ground for each housing unit, creating a closed ground loop system. Fluid is circulated through the loops to absorb heat from the surrounding soil.

The heat is concentrated via a heat pump and transferred to each unit to provide space and hot water heating.

In the summertime, the process is reversed with the ground loop carrying heat away from the unit to cool the home. Geoexchange systems are easily configured to accommodate site size, ground conditions and heating/cooling requirements.

Clean, green and cost effective

Since home heating and cooling typically account for 29 per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions, installation of the geoexchange systems at Wakefield Beach are truly an environmentally friendly energy choice.

The systems provide energy savings of 500 MWh per year and reduce greenhouse gases by 85 tonnes. What’s more, extracting energy from the earth reduces the need to import electricity from out-of-province and takes pressure off BC’s over burdened electrical grid.

Using a geoexchange system, the estimated energy required to provide heating, cooling, and hot water is up to 75 per cent less than a conventional system. Combining the reduced energy requirement with Terasen's stable monthly charge for operating and maintaining the system, residents are well insulated from the price volatility of conventional energy markets.

The choice is yours

While helping the planet, an environmentally friendly geoexchange system can distinguish your development in a competitive marketplace.

Opting for Terasen ownership and management frees up substantial development capital and provides your purchasers with the confidence that a recognized BC energy company will provide all the services they would receive with a traditional energy option.

Helping the planet, reducing capital expense and providing owner’s piece of mind – a winning combination.

The Terasen advantage

Residents at Wakefield Beach sleep soundly at night knowing that Terasen owns and maintains their new energy system. Providing round-the-clock customer service and emergency response, Terasen ownership and management ensures that Wakefield Beach’s geoexchange system provides heating and cooling as temperatures rise and fall.
