1950s

  • Inland Natural Gas was incorporated in 1952 to distribute natural gas throughout the BC Interior. The company purchased several subsidiaries, including:
    • St. John Oil and Gas
    • Peace River Transmission
    • Canadian Northern Oil and Gas
    • Grand Prairie Transmission
  • By 1957, Inland Natural Gas was serving 25 Interior communities.

1960s

  • Five new pulp mills were connected to the Inland Natural Gas system.
  • Service was extended to Hudson's Hope and the W.A.C. Bennett Dam.
  • First common share dividend.
  • First computer billing.

1970s

  • Inland Natural Gas purchased Columbia Natural Gas.

1980s

  • In 1981, Inland Natural Gas installed its 100,000th gas meter.
  • Natural gas service was available in 44 Interior communities.
  • Inland Natural Gas purchased Trans Mountain Oil Pipe Line Company Ltd.
  • Inland Natural Gas purchased the Lower Mainland gas division from BC Hydro and changed its name to BC Gas. BC Gas served 546,000 customers in 70 communities across the province.
  • Company assets included 27,000 km of natural gas pipeline systems.

2000s

  • BC Gas opened its Surrey operations centre in 2000.
  • Southern Crossing pipeline was completed in 2000 at a cost of $396 million.
  • By the end of its fifth decade, BC Gas served 820,000 customers from Vancouver Island to the East Kootenays.
  • BC Gas purchased Centra Gas BC Inc. and Centra Gas Whistler Inc. in 2002, adding 75,000 natural gas customers on the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island, and 2,000 piped propane customers in Whistler.
  • On April 25, 2003, BC Gas Inc. became Terasen Inc. As with the previous name change, the company's growth beyond BC and into diversified business lines was the impetus for the name change.
  • In 2005, Terasen Inc. was purchased by Kinder Morgan Inc. out of Houston, Texas.
  • In 2007, KMI sold Terasen Inc. to Fortis Inc. of St. John's, Newfoundland.
